"Downton Abbey" is set on a sprawling English manor in the early 20th century. It begins with the sinking of the Titanic and extends into World War I and beyond. The focus is on Lord Robert Grantham and his family, which includes his magisterial mother, Violet, his wife, Cora, and his daughters, Mary, Edith and Sybil. Because daughters are unable to inherit property, the manor is set to pass to a distant relative named Matthew, who comes to live near the house with his mother. Equal time is given to the extensive service staff of the home, which includes no-nonsense head butler Carson, maternal head housekeeper Mrs. Hughes, frazzled cook Mrs. Patmore, innocent cook's assistant Daisy and star-crossed servants Anna and Mr. Bates, among others.
