After being tried and convicted of murder, Henri "Papillon" Charriere, who is known as the safe cracker of the Parisian underground world is sentenced to life on Devil's Island. Knowing that he was framed for the murder with no possibility to prove his innocence, Papillon makes friends with a well-known counterfeiter, Louis Dega. With the help of Dega and their newfound friendship, Papillon is able to provide the finances to model his escape in exchange for protection and security. Through a series of unpredictable events, Papillon is able to see the light at the end of the tunnel and go towards his eventual escape.
