The Last Kingdom tells the story of a Saxon boy named Uhtred of Bebbanburg, whose father is killed by Vikings. However, when the Vikings choose to raise Uhtred as one of their own, Uhtred begins to question his cultural identity. Uhtred's internal crisis grows as the Vikings advance upon the last Saxon kingdom, where the future Alfred the Great plots to reclaim Viking territory for the Saxons and create a united and uniquely Saxon nation. With a battle for the right to Saxon territory on the horizon, Uhtred must choose whether he is a Danish Viking or an Anglo-Saxon.
