Quentin Coldwater grew up with a love of magic. Despite his desire to become a magician, he decides to study finance in college, which is a career his family approves of. One day he is mysteriously recruited to visit Brakebills College, which turns out to be a school that trains magicians who have the gift of using true magic. After Coldwater passes the school?s entrance tests, he begins his studies and soon uncovers his powerful magical abilities. Despite pursuing his love of magic, Coldwater struggles when his girlfriend is not admitted and she begins pursuing magic in dark places.
