Emily, Spencer, Hanna and Aria seem like four normal teenage girls, but they are all harboring dark secrets. Alison was part of the group until she was murdered, and now the four girls are being stalked and manipulated by someone who knows their secrets. Aria is dating her teacher, Hanna is a shoplifter, Emily is gay, and Spencer has a habit of wanting relationships with her sister's boyfriends. Along with trying to keep their secrets to themselves, they must also protect themselves against this unknown stalker who will stop at nothing, including murder, to expose all of their secrets. The stalker also knows who killed Alison and gives the four girls tiny clues that lead them to the horrifying answer that all of them want to avoid. This mysterious person communicates through notes, text messages and phone calls, often leading the girls on a wild goose chase either to find another clue to Alison's murder or trying to keep one of their own secrets from being exposed. They agree to tell no one about their troubles because their secrets will be exposed if they do.
