Frankie Heck is the overworked and overwrought mom to three children. Her husband is a no-nonsense manager at a construction company, while she works as a car salesman and later a receptionist at a dentist's office. She is very devoted to her family but frequently frazzled as they expect more out of her than she has the time to give. Homework, interpersonal problems, housework and her own aspirations of further schooling all compete for her attention, and it's all she can do to get a little peace and quiet in her own home once in a while. Each Heck child is a unique individual. Brick is the youngest, and he has a fairly mild form of autism. He reads constantly and has a number of strange habits that make his parents concerned for his well-being. The oldest is Axl, who is extremely unmotivated and often obnoxious. He also frequently walks around with no shirt. The middle child is Sue, who is hopelessly clumsy but an eternal optimist. Together, they muddle through life in the midwest.
