Bones is based on the real life work of anthropologist Dr. Kathy Reich, and it outlines the cases of Dr. Temperence Brennan and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, who work together to investigate suspicious deaths. They do this on very little evidence, usually not more than the badly decomposed body of the victim. Although this show can be gruesome at times, the science is realistic and it does a good job using humor to balance out the seriousness of the episodes. The two protagonists are generally at odds; Dr. Brennan is a scientist and her partner, Booth, is an ex-military sniper who does not trust science or scientists, which creates tension that hinders the investigations. Dr. Brennan's headstrong will and sometimes lack of social skills also makes it hard on Agent Booth when he is required to smooth over the social blunders that Dr. Brennan has caused in the investigation.
