Tommy and his pregnant wife Joanne live in a rundown apartment building when Joanne is attacked in the elevator by three youths in hoodies. Joanne is stabbed with a hypodermic needle in the abdomen during the attack, but she manages to give birth to a healthy baby girl named Elsa. Joanne falls into a coma and eventually dies. Tommy is heartbroken and is befriended by Marie, a nurse. Tommy develops agoraphobia as a result of the attack. Tommy is also being helped by a priest who tells Tommy that the children who attacked them are evil and not human and intend to take Elsa to turn her into one of their own. The priest insists the only solution is to destroy the apartment building and all the affected children inside. Marie believes the children are to be pitied as they just need someone to take care of them. In a confrontation, Marie is killed as she tries to reason with them, and Elsa is kidnapped. Tommy, the priest and Danny, a rescued child, fight the hooded children to get Elsa back. The priest dies, but Tommy and Danny succeed in destroying the apartment building and rescuing Elsa.
