The Vestalis Academy isn't a normal home for orphans. The school is an isolated, windowless institution where girls are raised to believe that the only way they can ever become worthy of adoption is through suffering. Vivien, a sixteen-year-old who has lived a prison-like existence at the school for many years, has finally made it to Level 16. Only good, clean girls who focus on purity and obedience reach this level of education. After all, she learned years ago that allowing herself to give into vices like curiosity, anger and deceit only results in heartache. Yet Level 16 is much harder than the earlier levels. When she is reunited with a friend, Sophia, who betrayed her trust and caused her to suffer needlessly, she realizes that the only way she can escape the academy is with help. The girls decide to work together to try to find out the secrets of Vestalis before living on Level 16 results in their deaths or worse.
