Two Navajo police officers- Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and his deputy, Jim Chee- investigate a double murder on a remote outpost near Monument Valley in 1971. As the officers attempt to solve a series of seemingly unrelated crimes, they also must confront challenges to their personal and spiritual beliefs. Both Leophorn and Chee struggle with memories from their past and growing up on the Navajo reservation, and must learn to confront their inner demons.
