In 1989, expatriate Lucy Fly lives in Tokyo where she has made a successful life for herself after having dealt with a troubling and painful past. One day, she meets Teiji Matsuda, a local restaurant worker and photographer, who seems to understand her pain. Lucy enters into a romantic relationship with him even though he seems obsessed with taking pictures of her. Lucy then meets another expatriate, Lily Bridges, who is from her home country. Their shared origins help them to quickly become friends. Yet, the friendship sours for Lucy when Lily seems too interested in Teiji. When Lily goes missing, Lucy finds herself at the heart of a local police investigation.
