When she gets off the concert stage, singer st. Vincent becomes Annie Clark, her real-life pedestrian persona that is not beholden to her larger-than-life stage presence. The singer wants to make a documentary about her dual life, so she enlists the aid of her filmmaker friend, Carrie, to create the project. However, Annie and Carrie have different ideas about how the project should play out. Although Carrie adores her best friend's plain personality off-stage, she doesn't think that such scenes will play well with the entertainer's audience. St Vincent ends up invading Annie's personality, embodying the vices and control of stardom.
