A slightly fictionalized account of famed war photographer W. Eugene Smith?s 1972 journey to Japan to document the cruel effects of mercury poisoning on the citizens of Minamata. Smith?s career was flagging at the time as he suffered the ravages of alcoholism and creative burnout. He views the Minamata story as a chance to restart his career and earn desperately needed money to support his large family. Smith must overcome great odds and wrangle with uncooperative editors. He is also devastated by the suffering of children and adults poisoned by mercury and stunned by the greed of corporate interests.
