Cathy Jamison is a 42 year old wife, mother and teacher who has always done what is expected of her. She is stunned to receive a life-altering diagnosis of stage 4 melanoma cancer by Dr. Todd, an inexperienced physician barely out of his residency. Initially keeping her terminal diagnosis from her self-absorbed family, husband Paul and teenage son Adam, Cathy takes chances that puzzle her family. She reestablishes contact with her brother Sean, a man more comfortable sleeping in the backyard than indoors, and befriends her grouchy neighbor Marlene, a woman with her own hidden issues. As Cathy confronts her unexpected fate and desperately persists in living what is left of her life, her actions are not always looked upon with approval. Exploiting the determination to go after what she desires, she installs a backyard pool, cashes out a retirement fund for a flashy new sports car, experiments with Ecstasy and embarks on a spontaneous affair with a handsome handyman.
