Joy is an ordinary housewife living in Chicago in 1968. After learning that her pregnancy threatens her life, however, she must resort to drastic measures to terminate it: an underground society of women who are all known as "Jane." Joy is inspired by the care that she receives from the Janes, so she becomes one of them, helping other wives and mothers who also need clandestine abortion services. But will she be able to continue her work when her involvement with the Janes reaches the ears of the authorities?
