After a horrific civil war, in lands once known as the United States, a religious-based military dictatorship forms a new government known as Gilead. This new country's laws are heavily biased against women. Environmental pollution coupled with STDs nearly destroyed the ability of human women to have babies. As a result, the male leadership has decided that women have been part of the problem and must be ruled over entirely to maintain the survival of the species. As second-class citizens, women must serve the will of the male members of society. They aren't even permitted to learn how to read. Any women who break Gilead's laws find themselves subjected to the worst kind of horrors. Those few women who aren't infertile must typically become slaves known as Handmaids to male government leaders whose wives haven't been able to give them children.
