Ireland in the early 1200s. The Normans are invading an island that has already been torn apart by centuries of tribal warfare. A group of monks begins the long journey to escort their most sacred relic to Rome across a war torn countryside. As they progress and discover more about the true meaning and symbolism of the relic, the monks see their journey become even more difficult and perilous and realize, perhaps too late, that their faith in this relic may lead to their undoing.
