Elizabeth McCord is asked to help the President of the United States as secretary of state. He trusts her to advise him on important issues. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy to see Elizabeth join up with the president. The President's Chief of Staff seems to place his own desires ahead of doing the right thing, and he isn't thrilled with Elizabeth. The staff left to her by the previous secretary are not accustomed to doing things the way Elizabeth wants them done. Aside from dealing with political issues, she also has to deal with her family and the stress every woman faces when she's a working mother.
