A British comedy filmed in "mockumentary" style, set in a nursing home. The title character is a caretaker in this home, surrounded by quirky misfit co-workers. Derek loves reality TV, animals, and speaking his mind, and is largely ostracized and rejected by others outside his job, as many take him to be autistic. Both the employees and residents of the home are misfits who interact poorly with mainstream society. This helps Derek feel empathy and caring for the infirm and mentally ill persons under his care, and he often goes beyond the call of duty in the course of his job.
