Seattle homicide detective Sarah Linden is hours from relocating to California with her fiance and son when the body of teenager Rosie Larsen is found in the trunk of a car registered to mayoral front-runner Darren Richmond. Forced to partner with her replacement, edgy former vice cop Stephen Holder, Linden struggles to unravel the mystery of Rosie's final days while demons from her own past hamper the investigation and threaten her attempt at a new life. Meanwhile, Rosie's death tears the close-knit, working-class Larsen family apart, and Richmond's political campaign descends into crisis mode as each staff member becomes a suspect, and rival candidates see the opportunity to take him down.
