This fantasy drama follows the adventures of Emma Swan in Storybrook, a town populated with fictional characters who are stuck in a place where time stands still. On her 28th birthday, Emma Swan's son, Henry, who she gave up for adoption 10 years earlier, shows up at her home with a magic book. Emma does not believe Henry when he claims to be her son, but she agrees to drive him home to Storybrook, where he lives with his adopted mother, Regina. In Storybrook, Henry informs Emma that the townspeople are under a curse that has erased their memories as fairy tale characters. Deprived of their "happy endings," they cannot leave while time has stopped in the town. According to Henry, Emma is the only one who can break the curse. Concerned about her son and the bizarre behavior of some of the residents, Emma decides to stay in Storybrook. There, she slowly learns the backstories of the characters and slowly begins to understand her own history and fate.
