Fifteen-year-old David Portnoy is nerdy, passionate, and uncertain about his life as his father prepares to re-marry. Then he believes he may have found a bird that is thought to be extinct, the Labrador duck. He and the two other teenage boys who make up the local Young Birders Society, along with their photographer classmate Ellen, begin an interstate road trip to find the rare bird and unravel the mysteries of life. They discover that a walk in the woods can become so much more than just a walk and that time and relationships can change even the deepest personal struggles as the trip becomes about something bigger than spotting a bird.
