The small, Louisiana town of Bon Temps has many lively residents, including a telepathic waitress, named Sookie. With the ability to hear people's thoughts, Sookie's world is full of offensive remarks toward her and others. She is outright tired of it all. But everything changes when she meets Bill. As a vampire that has recently mainstreamed into society, Bill is a former Civil War soldier that does not have blindingly loud thoughts. In fact, Sookie can't hear him at all. Her boss, Sam, is not thrilled about the new love connection. As a shape-shifter, Sam understands that the supernatural world can be dangerous. Sookie is certainly not ready for fangs and blood. As Sookie and Bill get to know one another, mysterious murders turn up in and around Bon Temps. Although citizens look to the new vampire as the suspect, there are other plots afoot that eclipse a simple vampire feeding. With a vampire area sheriff in the wings, looking for Sookie's help in human matters, it is up to Bill to protect Sookie and himself from harm in the Bayou.
