The Royal Air Force in Britain relied on Avro Lancaster heavy bombers to help them fight the Nazis over Europe during World War II. These were the planes used during raids and bombing strikes. These were the planes that made a seismic shift in the expected outcome of the war. Although the Lancaster bombers could held well against the enemy, the RAF at one point lost more than 40 in a night. During the war, more than 55,000 bomber crewmen, many only 22 years old, died in service while fighting in these planes. They're best remembered by those who fought beside them.
