Nitram, a teen living in the suburbs of Australia in the mid-1990s, is frustrated by his inability to fit in with his peers. He has an overbearing mother who wants him to have a normal life, but he can't seem to find it. So, when he unexpectedly finds a friend in Helen, a reclusive heiress who lives on the mountainside, they become closer than ever. But when Helen shows signs of mental illness and Nitram's loneliness grows into anger, their relationship ends in tragedy. Nitram's descent into madness leads him to commit acts of violence against others and himself.
