Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, despite not having been in contact after their teenage rivalry from the cult classic Karate Kid movies, end up both starting rival karate dojos. Johnny Lawrence, who struggles with self esteem after being overshadowed by an authoritative step-father all of his life, finds purpose in helping his students at Cobra Kai learn to find their own strength and worth through karate. In response, Daniel LaRusso opens Miyagi Do because he fears that Johnny Lawrence and Cobra Kai can never shed their reputation as bullies who do more harm than good.
