Living as a single mom in a neighborhood of Texas is Turquoise Jones. She is the past recipient of the Miss Juneteenth competition that includes full-ride academic scholarships. Even with her daughter's evident lack of excitement, she signs up her daughter, Kai, in the same contest. While other past winners of Miss Juneteenth have managed to have good careers, the schooling of Turquoise was disrupted by Kai, which caused her to fall out of university and serve as a dancer for a while. She now works at a pub and at a crematorium as a stylist to pay the bills.
