Violet Markey's sister, Eleanor, died in a tragic car accident, and Violet hasn't found a way to reinvest herself in life. Theodore Finch struggles with mood swings, semi-violent physical behavior and discrimination by others. Both Violet and Theodore feel utterly alone in the world and trapped in dark places. When their teacher gives them an assignment to find two or more wonders in their state, Theodore decides to use this opportunity to help and even woo Violet. As the students try to overcome their struggles, they soon learn that they can be the bright places that they need when facing dark times and even darker emotions.
