In more than 350 years, humanity will find a way to cheat death by storing the human consciousness in technology that allows mind transfer into a new body. People no longer have to worry about serious injuries that can cause immobility or even death. A rich aristocrat with a great deal of influence in this future society, Laurens Bancroft, pays to have a former soldier and prisoner of war, Takeshi Kovacs, transplanted into the body of a former dirty cop who didn't have a mental back-up. Bancroft had recently been murdered by someone. Although he had a back-up for transfer, it didn't contain memories of his final moments. The police filed his last death as a suicide. Bancroft needs the truth. He tasks Kovacs with trying to find out who killed him before it happens again.
