For millennia, the Ellcrys, a magical tree, has provided a barrier between the Four Lands and a horde of ancient demons. Now it is dying. Amberle, the chosen guardian, must take its seed to an ancient site revealed through a vision. The last druid Allanon enlists Wil, descendant of the house of Shannara and heir to the unpredictable magic of the elfstones, to serve as her protector. They are reluctantly joined by Eretria, a thief ordered to steal the elfstones. Their quest takes them through lands devastated by a nuclear holocaust and filled with threats from flesh and magic (born of both faerie and science). As the Ellcrys weakens, the demon leader Dagda Mor begins an assault on the Elven capital Arborlon, striking the royal family and assembling a conquering army force should Amberle?s quest fail.
