The men who are working on Madison Avenue in the advertising industry in the 1960s call themselves "mad men." Sterling Cooper is one of the smaller firms in the area, and it goes through a lot over the course of this decade. Donald Draper is the innovative mastermind of the company, and he goes through a great deal. His backstory includes a hard childhood, which he prefers not to talk about with anyone. Though he projects a great deal of confidence and is successful, he has a lot of issues, which he deals with through drinking, smoking, and marital infidelity.
