Ricki gave up a life with her family to pursue her dreams of becoming a rock legend. Unfortunately, at 54, she's singing with her band at a run-down bar while dating her guitarist. Her ex-husband raised their children, but one of her daughters needs her. Julie's husband left her for another woman, and Julie is devastated. Ricki drops everything to try to comfort her daughter, but there's no bond between them after Ricki essentially left them to pursue her rock dreams. At dinner, she finds out that one of her sons is getting married and the other is gay. She's known nothing about any of them, and finally begins to realize all that she has given up in pursuit of a failing dream.
