Effie Gray is forced to prove that she is still a virgin after asking for an annulment of her five years of marriage to her husband, historian and critic John Ruskin. They live in the Victorian era when sexual desires were kept quiet, but Effie has fallen in love with another man. The man is an artist who was commissioned to paint her portrait. A court trial ensues, and Effie is forced to share the most intimate details of her life. It was a public display that took precedence over news of the ensuing Crimean War. Effie undergoes a physical examination to determine whether or not she is, in fact, a virgin. The experience is so traumatic for her that she eventually becomes psychosomatically impaired for the length of ten days. Effie wins her case because her husband has been deemed incurably impotent. She is ousted by society until she marries the man she fell in love with.
