The Amish are traditionally people who forgo modern technology and conveniences. They live off the land and follow a strict dress code based on religious rules. When children grow to 16 years old, they are allowed to leave the Amish community and test the English world before making their choice to stay and marry. This is called Rumspringa. In Breaking Amish, young people from the Amish or Mennonite community are moved to New York City. This is different from Rumspringa. The show follows these real teens as they navigate relationships, teenage influences and other life experiences. They share their experiences with each other and talk about their life in the Amish community and whether they will return to the Amish life after the crazy whirlwind of New York City life. The seven young people range in age from 19 to 26 years old. They arrive in the city, buy English clothes and try to adapt to a new lifestyle while dealing with pressures from their traditional families who often shun other family members when they break from Amish traditions.
