Zoe Hart is a typical New York dreamer. She breezes through medical school and graduates at the top of her class. When she is asked about her plans after school, she confidently announces that she is going to become a great cardio-thoracic surgeon and follow in her famous father's footsteps. But as Dr. Hart starts to piece together the foundation of her extremely successful medical career, she starts to see the wheels fall off and the pieces crumble to the ground. When she has reached her lowest point, she receives a message from a doctor named Harley Wilkes out of Alabama. Dr. Wilkes invites Dr. Hart to come south and practice medicine in the small Alabama town of Bluebell. Since Dr. Hart is completely out of options, she decides to take up Dr. Wilkes on his offer. However, when she gets to Bluebell, she finds out that Dr. Wilkes passed away before she even left New York. Not only that, but this complete stranger has given 50 percent of his small town medical practice to Dr. Hart in his will.
