Jay Prichett is the patriarch of a large, modern family, which is very diverse. He's re-married to a beautiful, younger woman. They have a young baby and a teenager Gloria had in a previous relationship. Jay has two children from his previous marriage. Claire who is married to Phil. Phil tries to be the cool dad with their three children, but it usually backfires. Jay's other grown child is Mitchell. He's a lawyer and lives with his partner. Mitchell and his partner Cameron adopt a baby. The family faces trials and tribulations faced by most families, and how they deal with it is humorous and lighthearted while being a testament to the diversity of most modern families. The father doesn't quite understand his family. They don't always make choices that he is proud of but he loves them regardless.
