The Mentalist follows the quest of Patrick Jane as he hunts down the hard-to-catch serial killer, Red John, who murdered his wife and young daughter along with countless others over the course of many years. Formerly a phoney psychic, Jane left his career and began working as a consultant for the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation). Each episode of The Mentalist follows a case that the Bureau and Jane are working on, while also weaving in the underlying plot of the search for Red John. Each episode brings them a little closer to catching the serial killer, but they usually quickly find they still have a long way to go. With helpers all over the place, including the ranks of government, Red John always manages to keep them searching.
