A small-town stockerbroker, Russ Potter, became the target of a lot of angry people after a merger didn't go through and they lost their money. When the father of his new girlfriend, Delaine, is murdered, he tells local sheriff Thurmond Fowler his concern that he might have been the original target. Thurmond has seen a lot of crimes during his many years on the force. He knows that what happens in the heat of passion can harm a person for the rest of their days. So, he pursues the clues to discover who had the most to gain from the death of either Delaine's father or Russ. The answers seem straightforward at first, given Delaine's gambling addiction and debt, but Thurmond soon wonders if there are more evil things happening in his small town.
