When Ben Menalowitz, a narcissistic, promiscuous, aspiring journalist from New York, receives a phone call from Ty Shaw, he learns that a girl he hooked up with, Abby Shaw, succumbed to an apparent drug overdose. Ty requests that Ben, whom Ty believes was actually in a relationship with his sister Abby, come down to Texas to attend Abby's funeral. As things progress, Ty tells Ben that he suspects Abby had actually been murdered, with Ty being convinced that Abby had never taken drugs. Ty asks Ben to help him uncover what happened to Abby, and Ben agrees to assist him.
