In Monstrous, Laura is fleeing an abusive ex-husband. She arrives in a remote area in California, gets a property by a lake, and a job. She and her seven-year-old son, Cody, worry her ex will find them, but her son is also worried about a mysterious lady in the lake. Cody goes to school and mysterious things start happening, Laura throws him a birthday party and no one shows up. One day, Laura goes to school to pick up her son and he's not there. It turns out he was not there. Her son had never been there with her.
