An aging jockey aims for a final championship and tries to regain his status in American society. But first, he has to overcome a new generation of riders. Steve Day is one of the top jockeys in America, but a riding accident early in his career left him unsuited for competitive racing. Long past his prime, Steve's rival trainer Larry Blackwell offers him a job as an exercise rider at the racetrack. The position seems like just another ignominious step down the ladder of an illustrious career, and it threatens to swallow his identity and dignity before it even starts. With all his old friends dead, and a new generation of riders who have no respect for his long-forgotten reputation, Steve is resigned to a lifetime of riding horses, never knowing what might happen.
