Mixed-race childhood friends reunite in middle-class adulthood. Irene and Clare become increasingly involved in each other's lives. Irene identifies as an African-American married to a Black doctor, while Clare "passes" as white and has married a prejudiced, wealthy white man. The irony is that both Irene and Clare have been in relationships with Black men.
"Passing" focuses on the serious issue of racism and colorism, which is still prevalent in society today. The plot is inspired by our current political and social status quo, where we constantly hear about race, gender, class, etc. - all of which are often used as excuses to ridicule one other.
