Flora, a conflicted young girl who retreats into comic books to cope with her parent's recent divorce, adopts a squirrel who survives a bizarre accident. Granting him newfound powers to understand humans and quickly gain intelligence, Flora names her new companion Ulysses. However, her mother wants to get rid of Ulysses, even though he can communicate with the family. Flora's mother kidnaps Ulysses, so Flora and her friends band together to save their furry friend. Before he escaped on his own, Ulysses wrote a poem that helps Flora and her mother to bridge their differences and heal their broken love.
