Kevin and Elizabeth Parsons and their son, Joshua, want for nothing material-wise in life. Kevin is the family's breadwinner. He has a traditional perspective about marriage and expects Beth to serve as the primary disciplinary parental figure and caregiver for Josh.
Josh doesn't have a lot of friends. When he starts to play with an imaginary one, Kevin and Beth actually see this as a positive sign in his development.
Yet, eventually, Beth notices that Josh's classmates seem to be frightened of him. Her son also becomes increasingly unstable and strange events start to take place in the home and at school.
When the situation worsens, Beth starts to wonder if Josh's invisible friend is really that imaginary after all...
