Sweetness in the Belly follows a British child, Lilly, who is abandoned in Morocco and flees England due to civil war. There, she meets Amina, an Ethiopian refugee, and the two of them make it their mission to help reunite immigrant and refugee families reunite. Most of the film revolves around Lilly's time in London, trying to make a living as a nurse as she waits for news of her lover, Aziz, who she had to leave behind in Ethiopia.
