In the not too distant future, an alien race known only as the Hosts colonizes Earth in a quick and seemingly effortless process that leaves countless dead and the survivors stuck inside of colony "blocks" made of walled-in geographic locations. The Bowmans, a family trapped inside of the Los Angeles block, have tried to live in what have become dystopian conditions under the leadership of humans who collaborate with the aliens under the rule of a global authority. During the invasion, Will and Katie Bowman and two of their children, Bram and Gracie, became separated from their third child, Charlie, who is now in a separate block. Will decides to risk capture and death at a forced labor camp known only as The Factory by using a coyote to cross into the other block to reunite with his son. What happens next takes the Bowmans to places they never expected and reveals truths about the L.A. colony and the invasion that could end with the downfall of the human race.
