When a deadly virus devastates the human race, average guy Phil Miller seems to be the only person left alive. After travelling around the North American continent for over a year to look for other survivors but finding no one, he returns to his hometown of Tuscon, Arizona in 2020. It is there where he happens upon the eccentric Carol Pilbasian, a notary from Delaware. Despite their differences, Carol attempts to "re-civilize" Phil and the two marry in order to repopulate the world. Along the way, Phil and Carol discover and are joined by several other survivors of the virus.
