In the post-apocalyptic future of 2043, the world has been devastated by a deadly virus. The virus has already killed billions and will continue to mutate until it wipes out all of humanity. James Cole has been sent back in time by a time of scientists working on Project Splinter to change the future. His mission is to stop the Army of the 12 Monkeys from ever releasing the virus in the first place during 2017. Cole enlists Dr. Railly to help him track down virus, while in the future, the scientists must deal with dangerous scavengers.
