A sleep doctor, Alice, receives a new case from a husband and wife who at first seem to suggest that they have suffered through two months of their son, Daniel, experiencing sleep paralysis and severe nightmares. When Alice announces that this is mental disorder, the couple then tell her that the entire family is sharing the experience. In an attempt to understand the phenomenon, Alice soon discovers that science alone can't provide the answers. When she turns to the supernatural, she learns that the family has been subjected to torture from the original nightmare of legend which is a parasitic demon. Alice, exposed to the monster through the family, must find a way to both save them and herself.
