During 1918, in a dugout in Aisne, a young soldier, Raleigh, has been assigned to serve under the command of a childhood friend, Captain Stanhope, who used to visit his home during the holidays. Raleigh, who has always looked up to Stanhope, requested the assignment. Another officer, Osborne, tries to warn Raleigh that Stanhope isn't how he remembers the man: Stress has caused his mind to suffer and he copes with alcohol. As he loses his innocence each day while watching Stanhope spiral and witnessing the horrors of war, Raleigh realizes the horrible truth: He must face the enemy at any cost.
